Our “Slurping Soup” event for children and parents, hosted by beijingkids magazine was a great success on Saturday 26 March. Held at the newly opened kid friendly Italian restaurant Alioolio beside the west gate of Chaoyang Park, Beijing, forty parents and children enjoyed our fun activities and slurped soup over a delicious lunch.
Cherie, Ulrike and Kathryn, three of the authors remaining in Beijing acted out a story, read some stories, explained what a third culture kid is, and involved the kids in some creative and fun activities with their parents.
We loved organising and conducting this event. Cherie commented, “I had fun and am really feeling like this project has come to fruition.” Ulrike noted, “I really felt we made our book become alive today! Then seeing our efforts result in such smiling faces of the families that attended seemed to be the tip of the iceberg.” Kathryn added, “It was so heartwarming to receive the positive feedback from the children and parents. Parents said that their children related to the stories and appreciated that they now have a useful resource to help their children”.
To best sum up the event, one of the parents told us what her daughter told her during the event, ” I didn’t know it would be this much fun!” A big thank you to all concerned for making this such a positive experience for all.
